This week, our Westwood mine in Québec is celebrating its 10th year of commercial production. Since 2014, Westwood has established itself as a solid mining operator in Abitibi-Témiscamingue contributing significantly to the local economy and our host communities. Happy anniversary Westwood!
On this special occasion, here’s what Renaud Adams, President and CEO of IAMGOLD had to say to our staff at Westwood:
“We are extremely proud to celebrate Westwood’s 10th year anniversary,
an important milestone in the life of the mine and for IAMGOLD as well. Like many underground mines in Abitibi,
Westwood has had to face a lot of adversity in recent years, but thanks to our staff’s expertise, we have managed to overcome challenges with an unwavering focus on excellence and health and safety. Westwood recently achieved its best quarterly production since reopening, and I am confident the mine has
everything it needs to continue operating for many years to come.”
Over the past decade, Westwood has played a crucial role in creating local jobs, with nearly 750 employees and contractors working with the mine, and in stimulating the local economy. From a supply chain point of view, 70% of the mine’s purchases are made in Abitibi-Témiscamingue. In 2023, a whopping $128 million was injected in the local economy.
In terms of community initiatives, Westwood mine has invested more than $4.8 million to date in a variety of projects, which are aimed at improving the quality of life of residents in the region Abitibi-Témiscamingue, and promote culture, health, education or protect the environment.
