Westwood and Aiguebelle National Park Partner for a More Sustainable and Starry Future

Aug 26, 2024

Our Westwood Mine is proud to be partnering with Aiguebelle National Park, in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region of Québec, to contribute to local environmental efforts in this popular tourist destination.

To date, we have donated 160 metric tonnes of wood from our Fayolle mine, which is a part of Westwood’s operations and located at the frontier of the park. The amount of wood donated will be used for various development projects within the park as it consolidates its infrastructure.

In addition, we are supporting the park in reducing its light pollution with a $10K donation to contribute to the park's mission of becoming an International Dark Sky Place, an accreditation awarded by DarkSky International to locations that offer exceptional starry nights, both to protect nocturnal ecosystems and to provide a unique immersive experience for visitors.

As part of this partnership, the park’s director, Frederic Bilodeau, currently sits on our Fayolle mine’s monitoring committee, the public consultation group formed for the mine. Having held his position for the past two years, we benefit greatly from his expertise. We value this lasting relationship we have built with the park as well as with our other fellow citizens who make up this committee.

Our team at Westwood recently gathered at Abijévis Beach in the park to celebrate this collaboration with other partners, including Tourisme Abitibi-Témiscamingue, who co-presented the event.

Luc Joncas, General Manager of our Westwood Mine, expressed his enthusiasm for this partnership:

"We are delighted to contribute to the preservation and enhancement of Aiguebelle National Park. This partnership reflects our commitment to sustainability and our willingness to support local environmental initiatives that benefit the community and nature."

Luc Joncas, General Manager, Westwood Mine

We aim to contribute to the conservation and enhancement of the park through our ongoing partnership. We encourage all nature-lovers to visit the breathtaking Aiguebelle National Park!
