We
recently announced the recipients of the 2024 IAMGOLD scholarships, that were
awarded through the Young Mining Professionals Scholarship Fund: Arielle Girard
and Magnus Roland Marun. Now it’s time to learn more about both
awardees!
The scholarship fund is designed to support the
development of the next generation of mining professionals and encourage
more diversity and inclusion in the mining industry. Each IAMGOLD scholarship
recipient received $5,000.

the Recipients
Arielle Girard, Laval University, Québec
IAMGOLD Women in Mining Scholarship

Arielle is a fourth-year mining engineering student at
Laval University, in Québec. She has completed three internships in both
underground and open-pit mines, which has given her valuable experience in the
mining industry. Besides her studies, she is active as the Vice President of
Communications for the student's association of mining and mineral engineering and
as co-captain of Laval University’s Canadian Mining Games team.
Arielle looks forward to graduating and starting her
career in mining because this essential industry offers great challenges and
opportunities. She loves teamwork and collaboration and believes the mining
industry is a place where she can make a significant impact and grow
professionally, all while respecting the environment, supporting communities,
and prioritizing safety.
Magnus Roland Marun, University of Toronto, Ontario
IAMGOLD Equity & Opportunity Scholarship

Magnus is passionate about understanding earth systems, natural resources, and the critical role mineral exploration and mining play in building a sustainable future economy. Studying geoscience, the environment, and geospatial data, Magnus has come to appreciate that mining lies at the intersection of his research and scientific skills as well as his drive to make the world a better, more prosperous place.
Field work during his degree has opened Magnus’ eyes to new places, ideas and ways of finding and developing critical mineral resources in the context of increasingly unstable ecosystems and global warming. Magnus is excited for a future in natural resources that prioritizes low environmental impacts alongside high value outcomes and feels prepared as a geoscientist to contribute meaningfully to this evolving industry.
About the Young Mining Professionals
Scholarship Fund
The
Young Mining Professionals Scholarship Fund is a not-for-profit organization
that helps fund and promote mining and mining-related education to Canada’s
next generation of mining leaders. The scholarships are directly granted to the
recipients. Close to $200,000 will be awarded through the fund in 2024. IAMGOLD has
participated in the Young Mining Professionals Scholarship Fund
since its inception in 2018.
