13 Years at Triple Zero for our Mill/Lab’s Team at Essakane

Feb 26, 2024

Our Essakane mine in Burkina Faso recently celebrated 13 years without any incident in the Mill/Lab sector, an exceptional record and a testament to the team’s unwavering dedication to Zero Harm®!

What does Triple Zero mean?

Achieving Triple Zero is rare enough to be underscored. It means that in the last 13 years, the Mill/Lab’s team hasn’t had a single recordable incident and that their Total Recordable Incidents or TRI indicator was null

Since the TRI is made up of three types of incidents, for which the team had none, the Mill/Lab team was able to achieve “0 – 0 – 0” or “Triple Zero”. (Go to end of article to learn more about the TRI and the three types of incidents that make it up)

In a ceremony held at the end of November during a mega MBA session, the Mill/Lab’s team was presented with a plaque by Gilles Ferlatte, VP of Operations, and a trophy by Bruno Lemelin, our Chief Operating Officer, who had the following words to say to everyone

“I congratulate the Laboratory Team for achieving Triple Zero for 13 years in a row. It’s a memorable achievement! Our teams all face different challenges, but I know that your achievement will inspire others to surpass themselves, so that we can all contribute to making our operations and our company even safer. Health and safety are an integral part of our culture at IAMGOLD, and it’s a value we should all cultivate!
Bruno Lemelin, our Chief Operating Officer.

An excellent record for the whole mine, too, in 2023!

Another historical achievement to underscore is the whole mine’s excellent health and safety record in 2023: they recorded their lowest incident rates since it started production in 2009. Congratulations to everyone! It takes a lot of focus, tenacity and teamwork to achieve such results!

What does TRI mean?

Total Recordable Incidents (TRI) are made up of three types of incidents:

- Lost Time Injury (LTI) or team member unable to come back to work due to injury.

- Restricted Work Injury (RWI) or team member assigned to other tasks different than their normal ones.

- Medical Treatment Injury (MTI) or team member receiving medical treatment or prescription.
