IAMGOLD helping to fight latest Dengue epidemic near Essakane

Dec 13, 2023

IAMGOLD is helping local communities near its Essakane mine in Burkina Faso fight the latest dengue fever epidemic by distributing screening kits and other supplies to surrounding medical clinics.

The kits and supplies will help with the prevention and treatment of cases of Dengue fever, which is prevalent in the area. The initiative will specifically benefit the people of Essakane’s nearby host communities of Falagountou, Markoye, Gorom-Gorom and Dori.

The US$10K initiative is part of our comprehensive community development program, which aims to contribute tangible benefits to our host communities by fostering economic growth, investing in sports and cultural projects, and improving access to health and education. Through our Zero Harm® vision, we also strive to reach the highest health and safety standards. This commitment guides everything that we do each and every day and puts the health, safety and well-being of our employees, contractors and the communities we work with at the centre of what we do.

“We aim to promote community health and well-being, and we are very proud of the work of our local community relations team on the ground. Kudos to them for giving back to the community and continuing to build such mutually beneficial relationships with our local partners,” said Aaron Steeghs, VP, Health & Safety Environment and Communities, IAMGOLD.

About Dengue: Dengue fever is a disease that is spread to humans by mosquito bites and is caused by one of four types of Dengue viruses. It can cause severe flu-like symptoms and, in severe cases, can be fatal. There is no vaccine or medication that protects against Dengue fever. There is no specific treatment for Dengue fever, but medical care can help with recovery and the control of symptoms (Source: Government of Canada).

About the Essakane mine: Located in the Sahel region 330 km northeast of Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso’s capital, the Essakane mine is a key player in the country’s economy and a major private employer.
