Earlier this spring, as part of their ongoing campaign signed in December 2022, Burkina Faso’s National Road Safety Office (ONASER) and IAMGOLD unveiled new road safety awareness signage throughout Ouagadougou, the country’s capital.
Highlights of this story include
- A total of six road safety signs were installed at key locations throughout Ouagadougou.
- One of the signs has been placed strategically near the capital’s main school (Lycée Marien Ngouabi) to encourage students to wear helmets when riding their bikes or motorcycles.
- The sign is 12m2 or 129 square feet.
- The school principal expressed his gratitude to ONASER and IAMGOLD for choosing their school and promoting road safety awareness, specifically helmet usage.
- An additional five awareness signs were installed near the capital’s main train station.
- These awareness signs targeting truck drivers are intended to raise awareness about seatbelt usage, vehicle overloading, and other road safety messages.
About the campaign
- This initiative is part of ONASER and IAMGOLD’s ongoing campaign, signed in December 2022 and deployed throughout 2023.
- A total of approximately US$160K has been provided by IAMGOLD to fund the campaign.
- The campaign targets a wide array of road users from youth and adults to drivers and pedestrians.
- The campaign focused on the leading factors in fatal and serious injury crash, such as failure to wear a seat belt or a helmet (when on a motorbike), impaired driving (i.e. alcohol, drug or lack of sleep) and speed.
“I’m extremely pleased to see our ongoing partnership with ONASER take shape. These signs will help raising awareness about good road safety habits in the capital, said Blandine Kaboré, Interim Country Manager. “Safety is at the heart of what we do at IAMGOLD, and it makes perfect sense to continue to invest in programs such as this, outside in the communities,” said Blandine Kaboré, Interim Country Manager.
