IAMGOLD’s Response to COVID-19

Last updated on June 10, 2020

The coronavirus disease ("COVID-19") has impacted the world in unprecedented ways. In these extraordinary times, IAMGOLD is taking critical steps to safeguard the health & safety of our stakeholders while continuing to operate our business. In keeping with our Zero Harm© approach, we remain committed to continually strive to reach the highest standards in human health, minimize our impact on the environment, and work co-operatively with our host communities. Read on for important updates.

A coordinated global response

In February, IAMGOLD activated our cross-functional Corporate Crisis Committee (“CCC”), which holds daily meetings on activities, strategy and new developments.

  • The CCC draws on input and responds to requests and approvals from two additional crisis response teams – site operations and (combined) operations (including projects and exploration).
  • The overall response team draws on a broad range of expertise, including operations, human resources, health and safety, corporate affairs, communications, finance, information technology, and legal.

Protecting & supporting our employees

  • As a precautionary measure to ensure the health and safety of our employees, we have instituted an essential-employees only protocol and have moved non-essential employees to work-from-home. These protocols apply to our contractors as well.  Corporate office employees in Toronto and Longueuil will continue to work from home pending updated directives from their respective provincial governments. We are also providing guidance on working ergonomically from home, creating a safe home environment and IT tips, including cyber security.
  • At each operating site, we have medical facilities and healthcare workers, who conduct screenings and assessments, and will quarantine employees if and when needed.
  • The week of March 23rd, Essakane and Rosebel moved to self-confinement to better protect our employees and communities, and ensure the continuity of our operations.
  • On April 15, 2020, Westwood commenced the restart from care and maintenance status following the April 13, 2020 confirmation from the Quebec government that mining is an essential business activity. Westwood was placed on care and maintenance March 25, 2020 in accordance with the previous provincial directive. Ramp-up activities took approximately one week, with employees being trained on new procedures and sanitary measures, including adjusted work schedules and transport, physical distancing and protective equipment. We are also undertaking additional measures to improve monitoring of the well-being of our workforce. To limit the number of people on site, non-essential employees will be encouraged to work from home.
  • Activities at the Côté Gold Project in Ontario are not impacted by the Ontario directive as mining, exploration and development have been deemed "essential" activities in the province. However, we are proactively reducing activities at the site to ensure integrity of equipment and protection of personnel. The Company continues to be prudent in managing capital expenditures with de-risking activities.
  • All non-essential travel has been cancelled.
  • We are rolling out support systems for physical and mental health support to our employees at each site and office, including a hotline they can call from their location for further support.
  • Communication is key to connecting and informing our people. To this end, we have instituted a weekly CEO letter to employees, regular updates on new developments and resources, an internal platform containing resources and regular site communications.

Working Together to Ensure Best Practices

  • IAMGOLD is in regular contact with peers, industry groups, including regional workgroups and the Mining Association of Canada, health authorities, local and state governments. We are following the World Health Organization guidelines and will follow local directives with respect to COVID-19 response.
  • We have a system in place to navigate crises and are prepared to respond to shifting challenges through scenario and contingency planning. This includes potential impacts to people, operations, supply chain, sales and the gold market.
  • IAMGOLD has a global business, with existing technology in place to enable communication across our sites. We are also fortunate to have a strong balance sheet and do not require external capital for our business continuity. Further, we are cognizant of market conditions and remain prudent in our spending.
  • Our employees have adapted well, are resilient and remain our source of strength in these difficult times. We will continue to work together through this crisis to emerge even stronger.

IAMGOLD is fully prepared to weather the storm

Despite the uncertainty caused by COVID-19, IAMGOLD is resilient, financially healthy and confident that it can weather this storm. We are fully committed to supporting each other while diligently implementing the health & safety measures needed to reduce the impact of COVID-19 and flatten the curve of infection rates. United as a team, IAMGOLD has the talent, determination and strength to successfully navigate this global crisis.

Community Support

Health and safety has always been a priority for IAMGOLD. In these uncertain, unprecedented times, we believe it’s more important than ever to be good neighbours and take care of each other.

To help our host communities, IAMGOLD has allocated $1.5 million* to fund diverse global initiatives to protect and support the most vulnerable against the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Where possible, IAMGOLD has focused on finding local solutions to this global issue.
