IAMGOLD’s Response to COVID-19

Last updated on July 7, 2021

The global COVID-19 pandemic ("COVID-19") has impacted the world in unprecedented ways. In these extraordinary times, IAMGOLD has taken critical steps to safeguard the health & safety of our stakeholders while continuing to operate our business. In keeping with our Zero Harm® approach, we remain committed to continually strive to reach the highest standards in human health, minimize our impact on the environment, and work co-operatively with our host communities. Read on for important updates.

A coordinated global response

At the outset of the pandemic in March 2020, IAMGOLD activated a cross-functional Corporate Crisis Committee (“CCC”), which held daily meetings on activities, strategy and new developments.

  • The CCC drew on input and responded to requests and approvals from two additional crisis response teams – site operations and (combined) operations (including projects and exploration).
  • The overall response team draws on a broad range of expertise, including operations, human resources, health and safety, corporate affairs, communications, finance, information technology, and legal.

Protecting & supporting our employees

As a precautionary measure to ensure the health and safety of our employees, we have instituted an essential-employees only protocol and moved non-essential employees to work-from-home. These protocols apply to our contractors as well. Corporate office employees in Toronto continue to work from home, pending updated directives from the Ontario provincial government. With the recent easing of restrictions in Quebec, we have provided our staff the option of returning to office on an exclusively voluntary basis, to a maximum of 25% occupancy. We continue to monitor the situation in both provinces, re-evaluate our protocols and communicate any relevant updates to ensure that our employees feel safe at work and at home.

  • Further, we have provided guidance on working ergonomically from home, creating a safe home environment and IT tips, including cyber security.
  • At each operating site, we have medical facilities and healthcare workers, who conduct screenings and assessments, and will quarantine employees if and when needed.
  • All non-essential travel has been cancelled.
  • We have rolled out support systems for physical and mental health support to our employees at each site and office.
  • Communication is key to connecting and informing our people. To this end, we have instituted regular updates on new developments and resources, an internal platform containing resources and regular site communications.

Working Together to Ensure Best Practices

IAMGOLD is in regular contact with peers, industry groups, including regional workgroups and the Mining Association of Canada, health authorities, local and state governments. We are following the World Health Organization guidelines and will follow local directives with respect to COVID-19 response.

  • We have a system in place to navigate crises and are prepared to respond to shifting challenges through scenario and contingency planning. This includes potential impacts to people, operations, supply chain, sales and the gold market.
  • IAMGOLD has a global business, with existing technology in place to enable communication across our sites. We are also fortunate to have a strong balance sheet and do not require external capital for our business continuity. Further, we are cognizant of market conditions and remain prudent in our spending.
  • Our employees have adapted well, are resilient and remain our source of strength in these difficult times. We will continue to work together through this crisis to emerge even stronger.

Community Support

Health and safety has always been a priority for IAMGOLD. In these uncertain, unprecedented times, we believe it’s more important than ever to be good neighbours and take care of each other.

Where possible, IAMGOLD has focused on finding local solutions to this global issue. We are working closely with our host communities and local governments to identify needs and support relief efforts, by bolstering food security, donating medical equipment and by contributing to aid funds. Below are select highlights of IAMGOLD’s COVID-19 global initiatives to date. (All figures in US dollars, unless stated.)

To help our host communities, IAMGOLD has allocated $1.5 million to fund diverse global initiatives to protect and support the most vulnerable against the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, including cleaning equipment and supplies, PPE and life support equipment.

IAMGOLD further contributed $250,000 to UNICEF to support the International ACT-A / COVAX Emergency Response vaccination program.

We are committed to being a good corporate citizen and working in partnership with our host communities.
