Zero Harm

IAmGold Zero Harm

You may have seen the logo and come across the name, but what is Zero Harm? It’s our commitment to each other, the environment and the communities in which we operate. This is not a wild claim that bears no weight, but the lifeblood of everything we do at IAMGOLD. That means reaching the very highest standards in health and safety, biodiversity and human rights.

Health & Safety

One thing that will become immediately clear when you join IAMGOLD is that there is no compromise on safety. We take every precaution to ensure everyone goes home safe.

At the start of your operations placement you’ll take part in a 1 to 3-day health and safety course and receive ongoing training throughout your placement.

It’s important that we are all responsible for our own safety and that of others. Wherever you are, you will have access to Occupational Health & Safety leaders. We invite you to share any ideas that you think will improve our safety performance.

IAMGOLD Safety 101:

  • Understand risks and prevent harm
  • Investigate problems and eliminate or reduce hazards
  • Learn from mistakes and benchmark our success

Mind Body Achievement

As proof of our commitment to your safety we recently developed the Mind Body Achievement program. The program, which is known as MBA internally, will help you become a safety leader.

It provides management and leadership training that educates employees, promotes safety among workers, raises individual awareness and accountability, and creates a positive environment.

At the end of the program, you will become a world-class employee and safety ambassador.

DART – what is it and why use it?

Lost time incidents (LTI) are injuries that are severe enough to prevent an employee from working. Days Away, Restricted or Transferred Duty (DART) measures injuries that result in the employee not being fully capable of performing a job, regardless of whether that employee is recovering at home, assigned to temporary restricted duty or transferred to a different job for recovery. DART ensures we measure and communicate the impact of all employee injuries and the frequency and severity of employee injuries.

The Environment

Reforestation, renewable energy, land reclamation, water and waste management, recycled materials. At IAMGOLD you’ll do your part for the environment, following independent and internationally recognized guidelines and best practices to always better our environmental performance. This is something that we stick to thoroughly as a business.

As well as our involvement with Canada’s Towards Sustainability Mining, we are ISO 14001 certified at 4 of our 5 operations and our corporate office.

Beyond the Mine Site – Essakane’s Community Biodiversity Work

Before we started operations at the Essakane site in West Africa, the area was already degraded by deforestation and other human-related activity, particularly animal grazing. IAMGOLD undertook a project to improve the quality of silvopastoral areas and to maintain biodiversity in the area. More than 25,000 trees were planted and 350 hectares of land restored.

“We want to go beyond simply managing our environment and move towards improving it”.
Stephen J.J Letwin, President & CEO

Human Rights

We have a human rights training program which is available to everyone, everywhere, and have been working closely with the UN to develop our own human rights strategy. This ensures we protect and respect human rights everywhere we operate.

Many of the developing countries we operate in lack basic infrastructure. As an organization that works closely with our host communities, we are committed to enhancing, not disrupting local lives.

Throughout our operations in Africa and South America, we develop water, sanitation and education infrastructure. We also provide jobs, skills training, management and leadership development to harness local knowledge and empower communities. This is where you can make the most contribution as an IAMGOLD student.
